The next day at Ebenezer Jr. High Spike met up with Kayla and just kind of stared at her. The bruises from the day before were still obvious.
"My parents think I got in a small fight," she blurted out.
"What am I suppose think?" he asked forcefully.
"I couldn't talk yesterday, but I'll tell you the truth. ...a few members... of the school staff did this to me. They hit me..."
"The principal let this happen?"
"I don't know... I don't think he knew."
"I promise you that this isn't going to happen again."
"How can you promise that? What can you do?"
"Whatever it takes..."
They stared at the floor for a while. However, Jim saw him, and immediately became enraged. He sucker punched Spike. No one saw it coming and Spike didn't know what to think.
"That was a pretty dumb thing you did yesterday, punk!" His only sense of "big" was that he was rather tall. Not muscular, almost no body fat, only 6 feet of bones and anger.
"I don't want to fight you. I don't have the time."
"Well you're going to fight me whether you like it or not! I'm gonna kick your face in!"
"I hear the teachers here aren't too kind. This probably isn't too br-"
"I don't care! They can't do anything to me! Shut the hell up and fight me already! Come on!"
"I will not lower myself to hitting you just because you asked. Heh heh, you're gonna have to beg."
"You sonova- !" He began his punch at the same time as his sentence but was cut short when Spike tripped him.
"Run Kayla! I'll catch up with you later!"
She nodded and jogged away. Jim yelled and reached out to grab her.
"COWARD!" Spike yelled and viciously kicked Jim in the face. Kayla continued to jog away while Spike forced Jim to roll away from the battering.
"Who the hell do you think you are?"
Spike grabbed him by the collar and stared in his eyes. "My name is Spike. And there's only one thing I know besides that," he yelled as he punched him, "Things are going to change at this school!"
The school officer pulled Spike off of him and dragged him to the principal's office.
"The officer said you yelled 'things are going to change at this school' young man. What exactly do you find wrong with my school?" The principal asked while staring out of his large windows.
"The anarchy," he answered almost immediately.
The principal stared at him strangely. "We may not be the best, but all we strive for is control."
"Are you even aware that a 13 year old girl was physically abused by your staff sir?"
On the inside, the principal grinned. His twisted plan came to him instantly. "My god!" he shouted realistically. "Are you sure?"
"I know the girl somewhat well. Are you serious? You had no idea?" Spike was suspicious, of course.
"Well, we're allowed to use force, if absolutely need be. And, well, the students here aren't exactly cooperative. You must understand that we only do what we think must be done."
Spike didn't want to admit it, but his argument was valid.
"We try to control them, and teach them, but they won't have any of it. Some of the staff have simply become... discouraged to take action anymore."
"Either way, I'm sick of it!" He yelled.
"Do you really want to make things change?" the principal asked deviously.
"This place needs it, and I might as well do it if nobody else will."
"Fantastic. Then I'll give you the chance. If you truly wish to make a difference then I'll forget about any 'incident' that may occur during your stay here as long as the student body shapes up. I'm sure the teacher morale will increase under those circumstances."
"Corruption?!" he exclaimed angrily.
"A change for the better," the teacher corrected him.
Spike thought long and hard about it, and after school he had come to a decision. For the sake of some order at this school, he would have to comply. He gave his answer to the principal and went home.
"This is going to be incredible! With the skill of fighting described by others, this kid'll kick the crap out of every brat that bothers us. He's such an idiot," the principal was talking to himself in his office, "As soon as the bill is passed our fence will be ready and our hands will be untied. We won't even need that stupid kid."
The old man pulled a handgun out of his desk drawer, "Everything will be muuuch better."
Spike sat at home going over his situation. His amnesia wasn't getting any better anymore. His name was still all that rang through his ears. He knew that most people would need special care, or would be desperately confused at this point. For some reason, though, he didn't care. His past didn't seem worth remembering. He just knew that his past wasn't very good, this school needed to be fixed, and that Kayla needed a friend. Then something hit him; he must have a job! He couldn't just live somewhere and not have to pay anything. He ran to his schedule and analyzed it carefully. He did have a job. "I work at... 'Cindy's Diner'?" he read it aloud.
